Anne Ryan was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1889. She belonged to the early generation of the New York School Abstract Expressionist. The great turning point in Ryan's development occurred after the war, in 1948. At age 57, she discovered the collages of Kurt Schwitters. At the point on her focus was solely dedicated to experimenting with this medium. After her passing she had over 400 collages.
