Due to a two month delay caused by the congestion in New York Harbor our 200 page annual catalogue is finally in the mail to our clientele. This has been an extremely frustrating experience and completely out of our hands. However…..we have kept moving forward with our continuous buying addictions and present you with our “Recent Acquisitions” video accompanied by a 35 page digital catalogue.
Among our “Recent Acquisitions” is a rare 1938 major canvas by Hananiah Harari that was exhibited and published in the American Abstract Artist’s annual exhibition. This work is so contemporary that it could have been painted yesterday. Also included is a small 1935 cubist nude gem by Carl Holty a founder of the group in 1936. Continuing you will see a rare figural 1943 Charles Green Shaw titled “Sunset” that shows Shaw’s influence on the later work of Milton Avery. In addition to the members of the AAA Group we have also purchased a 1949 Eugene Gallatin that was from Virginia Zabriskie’s collection, a colorful 1946 canvas by Byron Browne titled “Bandsman”, a small 1932 Jean Xceron from the Paul Rosenberg’s Gallery, a cubist 1946 Gerald Coarding titled “The Musician” and a wonderful large oil collage from 1958 by Konrad Cramer titled “Portrait of Florence”.
In the Abstract Expressionist category, you will see two brushy and gestural examples by Nicholas Carone when he exhibited at the Staempfli Gallery in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. Carone was included in the famed Ninth Street Show, the founding director of the Stable Gallery and a very close friend of Jackson Pollock’s. Also included is a vibrant 1967 watercolor and gouache still life abstraction by Elaine de Kooning on hand made rice-paper….and….a 1958 Perle Fine India ink abstraction from her estate that relates to Philip Guston’s 1950’s works on paper.
Finally, we have a vibrant 1970’s Karel Appel acrylic that was exhibited at the Hickory Museum in North Carolina in 2000, a wonderful gestural figural work by the Black artist Emilio Cruz from 1962 and a late Lynne Drexler oil from 1982 titled “Patterned Wash”. I am not a fan of Drexler’s later work but this painting is painted so freely and brushy and reminds me of the immediacy of a David Hockney plein air painting….very much in the moment.
