This early work was executed by the artist shortly after her graduation from Yale University and prior to her marriage to Paul B. Zuber, civil rights attorney and professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Johnson's aunt (Rose) and uncle lived in Jackson, Mississippi, where her uncle served as Vice Provost at Tougaloo College. The artist's son, Paul Zuber, believes she would have likely seen scenes such as this when visiting them. BAA is very grateful for his assistance in cataloging this work.
