Brother and student of Jules Bastien-Lepage, one of France’s greatest plein air painters of the nineteenth century, Emile Bastien-Lepage had a style similar to that of his elder brother, although his work is somewhat brighter in palette and brushier in technique, which also shows the influence of the Impressionists. This is not surprising considering that Jules instructed Emile in painting and the brothers kept close contacts with many of the greatest creative figures in France at the time, including Saint-Gaudins, Rodin, Maria Bashkirtseva, J. Alden Weir, and many others.

Unlike Jules, whose main profession was that of artist, Emile was also a successful architect, who designed such structures as the Byzantine style dome and chapel for painter Maria Bashkirtseva (the structure still stands in the Passy cemetery in Paris). He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais, and first exhibited there in 1884 and obtained and honorable mention in 1889. He was also a member of the Sociétaire de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he regularly exhibited portraits and landscapes from 1910 until 1933.
