George F Higgins lived near the White Mountains during his active years, claiming East Somerville, MA as his residence in 1873 and Melrose, MA in 1876. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum from 1859 to 1862, at the Leonard Auction Rooms in Boston during the same period and at the Boston Art Club in 1883. Titles of his exhibition works included The White Mountains, Squam Lake, View at North Conway, On the Androscoggin, View At Littleton, NH, Rattlesnake Island, Winnepiseogee, View of Wolfborough, NH and Boston Common from the Public Library.
Higgins’ work, although early, is not as detailed or tight as that of the Hudson River School painters. His format and compositions are similar but he used a looser brush stroke oin his work. He had a penchant for pastoral landscapes and often there are cows or animals grazing in the pastures. He neither glorifies nor overly dramatizes his landscapes. Instead he paints them exactly the way he saw them. They are of a more humble and honest nature, a bit more down to earth than the intensified and religious works of Cropsey and Kensett.
Higgins’ work can be found in many private collections in New Hampshire and is frequently included in many books on the White Mountain Artists.
