VVFA Modern | Artists | Estaban Vicente (Spanish/American, 1903 - 2001)
Vicente was 30 years old and had studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid before he moved to the United States. His first solo exhibition was in 1928 at Ateneo de Madrid. After exhibiting actively in Spain, he had his first solo show in New York at the Kleeman Gallery in 1937. Vicente’s work was part of the 9th Street Show and all of the Stable Gallery Annuals. He held various teaching positions at such institutions as Black Mountain College (1948), University of California at Berkeley (1954 & 1958), New York University (1959-1969), Yale University (1960-1961) and at Princeton University (1965-66 & 1969-1972). Ten years before he died he was given a Gold Medal for Fine Arts from King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain.
Vicente lived in Bridghampton, New York and was a life long friend with all of the East End Abstract Expressionists.
